AI Could Create Hyper Realistic Games

Video game graphics have come a long way since the original arcade-style visuals of the 1980s. However, the advancement brought forth by the Unreal engine and Nvidia’s Ray Tracing still leaves a lot to be desired. Current games like GTA V look very good but still don’t have the hyper-realistic feel were were hoping to have in 2021.

Well, that might change in the near future. First reported by Kotaku, a project led by Stephan R. Richter, Hassan Abu AlHaija and Vladlen Koltun at Cornell University, could be the key to making hyper realistic games. The team published a paper called Enhanced Photorealism Ehancement, which details what makes this technology possible.

But the video offers a more condensed look at how practical this type of AI technology can be as it converts game images into eerily convincing real world ones. The GTA V clip is an example of what’s possible with this type of image analysis.

It will take considerably more time before we see actual game releases using this type of technology. But at the moment, there are several GTA V mods that offer more realistic models and shadows than what the original game has to offer. However, before you attempt to download one of them, make sure that your graphic card can cope with the more demanding computational tasks.
