Apple today launched AirTag, a sleek new device that lets you keep track of what matters most and find the Find My app. AirTag can be attached to a handbag, keys, backpack, or other item and tap into the global Find My network.

It’s capable of helping locate lost items while keeping personal information secure and private with end-to-end encryption. A single AirTag is $29 and a four-pack for $99, respectively. They will be available from Friday, April 30.

“AirTag, Apple’s new service leveraging Find My, will now make it easier than ever to track down and find everything that is important to you,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing”.

He added, “AirTag provides an unparalleled finding experience so customers can utilize the power of the Apple ecosystem and give their iPhones an added layer of versatility by adding privacy and security features”.

Magical Setup with a lightweight design
Each AirTag is precision etched, polished stainless steel that is water- and dust-resistant to IP67 standards. AirTag plays sounds that help users locate it, and users can easily switch out the battery by removing the removable cover.

AirTag has the exact same magic setup experience as AirPods. Just put it near your iPhone and it automatically connects. AirTag can be assigned to an item with the default name like “Keys” or “Jacket” or a user can provide a different name.

When a customer purchases AirTag from apple.com or the Apple Store app, the device can be personalized with free engraving, including text and a selection of 31 emojis. Its lightweight and durable Polyurethane Loop and Leather Loop offer an easy way to anchor AirTag in a bag or pocket, while the Leather Keyring and Leather Loop feature specially tanned European leather.

AirTag is properly enclosed around each accessory, making it convenient to secure AirTag to a user’s belongings. In this way, AirTag is kept with their important belongings while being easily accessible at all times.

Find it All in One Place
As soon as AirTag is started, users can access it from the new Items tab within the Find My app, including its current or last seen location on a map. A user who misplaces an AirTag and it is within Bluetooth range, the device can make a sound or just ask Siri.

Precision Finding with iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 is made possible by AirTag’s Apple-designed U1 chip using Ultra Wideband technology. The advanced technology allows a lost AirTag to be more accurately located and directed when in range. A user’s location is captured as they move with Precision Finding’s camera, ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope.

It is also possible for users to set AirTag into “Lost Mode,” which notifies them when it has been located or is in range. In the event a lost AirTag is found by someone, they can tap it with their iPhone, iPod touch, or other NFC-capable device and go to a webpage that displays a location and contact information for the owner, if one is provided.

Accessibility features built into iOS will be supported with AirTag, including Precision Finding, which can direct users who are blind or have low vision directly to AirTag by saying “AirTag is 9 feet away on the left.”

Built-in privacy and security
The AirTag application maintains data privacy and security by not storing physical location data, history, or personal information. A Find My device can communicate with the Find My network exclusively via encryption, so Apple does not know the identity or location of devices.

One of AirTag’s proactive features is that it rotates Bluetooth signal identifiers frequently to prevent unwanted location tracking. AirTag is a first in its industry in that it puts a stop to unwanted location tracking, without the need to install an app.

If an unknown AirTag is seen traveling with someone from one place to another in the course of the day, the iOS devices can notify the user if an unknown AirTag is seen to be traveling with them.

AirTag and Hermès
Apple and Hermes have introduced AirTag Hermès, which features handcrafted leather accessories and a Bag Charm. Custom-engraved AirTags will be sold with Hermès accessories that bear the Clou de Selle signature.

Locate My Network Accessory Program
New Find My Network accessory programs allow third-party products and accessories to add features for finding. By participating in the program, device and product manufacturers can now include Find My technology in their products, making customers more capable of finding a trusted item.
