Apple’s iPad Air has just received a hardware bump that puts it in line with Cupertino’s top tier tablet – the iPad Pro. Prior to the refresh, the thin and lightweight tablet was considered a bottom-tier device that catered to the leisurely needs of kids or young adults.

But that’s no longer the case, because this year’s Air, though a spitting image of last year’s model is now powered by the M1 processor. It’s the same chip that powers Apple’s MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac computers. Though it’s considered overkill, the new hardware should make it an extremely capable machine.

The 8-core CPU delivers up to 60 percent faster performance, and the 8-core GPU delivers up to 2x faster graphics performance compared to the previous iPad Air. This makes it fit for playing demanding gaming titles, 3D rendering, augmented reality and the ability to edit multiple streams of 4K video.

The presence of a USB-C port and support for magnetic attachments allow the Air to be connected to cameras, external storage, and displays with up to 6K resolution. It can also be fitted with Folio covers as well as the Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio for laptop-level productivity.

In addition to this, the new iPad air can be used with the second-generation Apple Pencil, which opens the door to sketch artists, avid note takers and avid doodlers alike to bring out the best out of this device to accomplish a variety of tasks.

The 10.9-inch, liquid retina display (500 nits of brightness) tablet has stereo speakers and Touch ID on the top button. On the front, there is an ultra-wide camera with support for center stage, which should prove useful for video conference calls. It keeps users in the frame regardless of how many they are at any given time and if they are pacing in front of it.
