Apple Launches New M1 iMac In 7 Colours

April 20, 2021 Off By Naveen Victor

Apple has just launched its brand new iMac in an assortment of colours, which is reminiscent of the ones produced in the 1990s and early 2000s. The new machines are powered by the same M1 chip found in the MacBook Air. MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. Cupertino has ditch the curvy design of its previous generation computers for a more industrial aesthetic.

It’s made up of an extremely thin slab of aluminum which is only 11.5 millimeters thick. The entire machine is about 50% smaller in volume compared to the last generation iMacs. Instead of a 21.5-inch screen, the new iMacs get a 24-inch 4.5K retina display that has 11.3 million pixels, 500 nits of brightness and P3 wide colour gamut with over a billion colours.

It has True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the color temperature as the environment changes for a more natural viewing experience. The screen is also coated with anti-reflective material to improve viewing angles and make it a little easier on the eyes.

The bezels are thinner too, but still manages to house a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, studio-quality mics, and a six-speaker sound system. It has three-microphone that are positioned in such a way as to reduce feedback. And support for directional beamforming allows them to better ignore background noise and focus on a user’s voice.

Like the MacBook line, the new iMac will be powered by either an 8 -core or 7-core M1 processor. The former is more powerful due to the presence of an 8-core GPU and 16-core Apple Neural Engine. It is supposed to be far more powerful than the 21.5-inch models of the previous generation machines.

These are Apple’s claims of power improvements:

  • Up to 85 percent faster CPU performance
  • Up to 2x faster GPU performance for certain apps like Affinity Photo and Photoshop, and up to 50 percent faster than the most powerful discrete graphics in the fastest 21.5-inch iMac
  • Ability to edit up to five streams of 4K footage, or one stream of 8K footage,5 without dropping a frame in Final Cut Pro.
  • Up to 3x faster machine learning in apps that leverage the 16-core Neural Engine in M1.6

The new iMac comes with colour matching Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse/Trackpad. And for the first time, it supports touch ID. A dedicated security component on the keyboard communicates with the Secure Enclave in the M1, which creates an encrypted channel to protect users’ fingerprint data from end to end.

This authentication method can be used to make purchases on Apple Pay and for fast user profile switching. A single press of a finger on the touch ID sensor, allows the new iMac to login to the user’s relevant profile almost instantly.

Both models come with two Thunderbolt ports with support for up to a 6K display, Wi-Fi 6 but the 8-core has a 1Gbps ethernet in the power adapter, which helps reduce clutter. Speaking of the power adapter, it is made up of a colour matched, woven 2 meter long cable. It attaches magnetically to the rear of the iMac.

The new 24-inch iMac is available to order beginning Friday, April 30, on apple.com and in the Apple Store app. Early orders are expected to be shipped by the second half of May and at the same time should make it to select Apple Stores and Authorized Resellers.
