Apple Reveals Vision Pro, Its New “Spatial Computer” Meant To Take AR & VR To Next Level

Apple has finally revealed its highly anticipated VR & AR headset that it calls Vision Pro. Sporting a slim and elegant look, the new gadget, dubbed a spatial computer, aims to combine digital content with the physical world. It consists of a high-resolution display system, a 3D user interface which can be controlled with our eyes, hands and voice.

Vision Pro is constructed from a singular piece of three-dimensionally formed and laminated glass that is polished to act as a lens for the wide array of camera and sensors. The device employs micro-OLED technology to pack 23 million pixels into two displays. Users with vision correction will be able to use ZEISS optical inserts for visual fidelity and eye tracking accuracy.

The Vision Pro runs on its own spatial operating system called VisionOS. Powering the unit is an M2 processor as well as an R1 chip that is responsible for receiving input from 12 cameras, 5 sensors and 6 microphones. It processes the information to produce content that looks like it’s appearing right in front of your eyes.

Apple says that R1 can stream new images to the displays (one for each eye) within 12 milliseconds which is 8 times faster than the blink of an eye. Featuring Apple’s first 3D camera, Vision Pro allows users to capture, relive, and immerse themselves with Spatial Audio. Your entire photo library can be accessed via iCloud.

It can create the feeling that sounds are coming from the environment around you by matching the sound to the space. Two amplified drivers inside each audio pod deliver spatial audio based on the user’s own head and ear geometry. high-speed cameras and a ring of LEDs that project invisible light patterns onto the user’s eyes for responsive, intuitive input.

Optical ID is a new authentication system that analyzes users’ iris under various visible LED light exposure then compares it to the enrolled Optic ID data. It’s [protected by the Secure Enclave to unlock the Apple Vision Pro. Said data is fully encrypted and stays on the device. Neither apps nor Cupertino’s servers are able to access it.

Apple Vision Pro runs on external power or can be used for up to two hours with its built-in battery pack. Prices start at $3,499 (U.S.), and will be available early next year on apple.com and at Apple Store locations in the U.S. More markets will be added to the list later in said year.
