Apple, like the rest of the tech community, has made the internet its primary mode of communication with its consumers. Gone are the days when flashy conferences and pop-up booths were used to build hype for a new launch or developer event. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many companies to rethink their execution of product launches and events.

That is why, beginning June 22 and for the first time ever, Apple will host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) online. The company is expecting to draw more than 23 million attendees from the global developer community during its week look session. It will be accessible in the Apple Developer app and on the Apple Developer website for free.

This year, marks Cupertino’s 31st WWDC, an event where developers are given early access to Apple’s software for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. This provides them with a head-start on app development and the opportunity to learn from Apple’s engineers about said systems. Information regarding the events’ various sessions including lab schedules will be published via the app.

During this year’s WWDC, the company will also be hosting the Swift Student Challenge. This is a competition where student developers showcase their coding skills by creating their own Swift playground. In case you didn’t know, Swift Playgrounds is an app for iPad and Mac that makes learning Apple’s home-brewed Swift programming language a fun and interactive experience.

Speaking of the contest, Apple said:

“Now through 11:59 p.m. PDT on May 17, student developers from all over the world can submit to the Swift Student Challenge by creating an interactive scene in a Swift playground that can be experienced within three minutes. Winners will receive an exclusive WWDC20 jacket and pin set. For more information, visit developer.apple.com/wwdc20/swift-student-challenge.”
