Apple Watch Outsold Swiss Brands Last Year

Apple sold more smartwatches in 2019, than all traditional Swiss watchmakers combined. According to Strategy Analytics, its research suggests that the Apple Watch beat out the competition by a huge margin. Compared to 2018, Apple’s sales increased by 36%, while Swiss brands’ decreased by 13%.

It’s estimated that Cupertino shipped 30.7 million units of their smartwatch last year compared to the entire Swiss watch industry, who only managed 21.1 million units. We believe that the inability or unwillingness of said watchmakers to adapt to the changing trends, may have contributed to this loss.

Strategy Analytics believes that, though analog watches remain popular among older consumers, the younger ones, gravitate towards smartwatches or wearable gadgets. Venerable brands like Swatch and Tissot, haven’t been able to produce a worthy competitor to rival the Apple Watch.

The latest watch from Apple, the Series 5, may help it extend the lead even further. Its helpful heart monitoring feature is attributed to averting several medical emergencies last year. There have even been instances where, wearers of the watch were made aware of preexisting medical conditions unbeknownst to them.

Then there’s the fitness tracking abilities that many gym buffs consider a godsend. Even among dedicated fitness trackers, the Apple Watch is still the preferred choice. Revered for its accurate health data, record keeping and coaching abilities, many consumers consider it a must have accessory.

If Cupertino continues to produce such amazing timepieces, its competitors, including established Swiss brands, will have difficulty keeping up. This is evident by the steady decline in their smartwatch market share, year on year.
