Apple has announced iOS14.5, which offers slightly more enhanced features compared to iSO14. The software is available to download today and brings with it several new functions that include better support for face detections, Siri and new privacy controls. Let’s take a look at what has changed.

Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch
Those with an iPhone X or later model who are using an Apple Watch Series 3 or later, can now use FaceID to unlock their phone while wearing a face mask. For this to work, the watch has to be on your person, unlocked and in close proximity to the iPhone. Then, you just have to pick up the iPhone and glance at it. This should unlock it and send haptic feedback to your watch.

Improvements To Siri
Apple now provides more diverse options for Siri’s voices. She can also initiate calls with multiple contacts or FaceTime the name of any group in Messages. Besides this, she can announce incoming calls through AirPods or compatible Beats headphones. During an emergency, she can place a call to emergency contacts if you’re unable to do so.

Better Privacy
Apple includes better privacy support with the new update. Apps need to prompt you for permission before being able to track any data. In Settings, you can view which apps have asked for permission to track your data.

Other Features
The Emoji pack now includes more inclusive skin tones of couples to ensure that all users are equally represented. In Maps, and for users in the US and China, iOS14.5 lets you report an accident, hazard or speed trap by telling Siri on an iPhone or CarPlay. Users can do this by saying something like, “There’s a crash up ahead” or “There’s something on the road.”

  • Apple News features a redesigned News+ tab
  • Apple Fitness+ supports streaming audio and video to AirPlay 2-enabled TVs and devices
