Build Your Own NES Console With LEGO Kit

The LEGO Group has jumped on the nostalgic train with its ‘remake’ of the venerable NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) console, which was originally launched in 1983. Nintendo subsequently re-released this gaming console in 2016, albeit a miniaturized emulation-based version with 30 pre-installed games from the classic NES library.

LEGO’s building kit for adults, aims to rekindle our joyful experiences with the original NES console, and share the experience with our own kids and family members. This project, was a collaborative effort between LEGO and Nintendo. It’s a brick-built NES model with realistic details of the 1980s console, including a retro TV set.

The entire console, controller and TV set can be assembled to form a complete gaming system. There’s even a gaming cartridge that can be loaded into the console! This attention to detail, will undoubtedly bring back fond memories of the NES’s heyday. That said, the TV screen, isn’t real, but a rolling ‘canvas’ with a Mario figurine in the centre ‘meandering’ past obstacles.

Users can scan a LEGO Mario action brick on said TV set, which is part of the Super Mario Starter Course. Mario will then react to on-screen enemies, obstacles and power-ups, just like in the real game. LEGO also has a number of Power-Up Packs and a range of expansion sets and collectible characters to choose from.

These sets and respective characters are designed to build out the world of the LEGO super Mario. The goal here, according to LEGO is to allow players to “unleash their creativity by building exactly the levels and challenges they want to see LEGO Mario and friends compete in.”

The LEGO NES will be available exclusively for purchase from LEGO Retail Stores and LEGO.com from August 1st 2020. However, next year, it will be made available to other retailers around the world. Visit www.LEGO.com to learn more and purchase the build set, when it does become available.
