The World Health Organization considers the act of washing one’s hands at regular intervals, a necessary measure to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. In addition to this, and according to healthcare professionals, you should spend at least 20 seconds washing your hands for it to be considered effective.

But keeping track of this can be a little cumbersome. That’s why designers and developers from Samsung Research Institute-Bangalore, India have come up with an app to manage this. It’s meant for Galaxy watch users, reminding them to periodically to wash their hands.

Once initiated, the app is able to walk them through the process by providing haptic feedback after a 25 second wash cycle. The first 5 seconds is allocated to turning on the tap and applying soap to the hands. The remaining 20 seconds is for the actual act of hand washing.

The app comes with preset reminders that can be customized based on the individual needs of the wearer. The goal here, is to develop a habitual need to maintain good hand hygiene, which in turn could dramatically reduce the transmission of COVID-19 via hand contact.

Galaxy Watch users can download this ‘Hand Wash’ app from the Galaxy Store. It’s Samsung‘s own version of Play Store, filled with apps, themes, widgets and wallpapers that should appeal to a wide variety of users.
