Google May Be Working On Cheaper Version of Latest Chromecast With Google TV

Google might be working on a more affordable version of its wireless TV interface: Chromecast with Google TV. According to a report by Protocol, a source close to the matter has revealed this to be the case. This isn’t surprising because previous versions of the Chromecast were far more affordable albeit they did little else than cast content from a mobile device to the TV.

The introduction of Chromecast with Google TV (4K video), brought a dedicated interface to users. This made it a standalone device instead of one dependent on a mobile device for content. As such, it’s far more expensive than a regular Chromecast, which is probably why Google may be looking at the possibility of introducing 1080p version to cater to budget minded consumers.

For many consumers, the Chromecast has been rendered irrelevant because most Smart TVs of today have comparatively similar user interfaces and casting capabilities. As such, many consider the dongle an unnecessary add-on. That said, there are advantages to using a Chromecast over a TV’s UI such as several years of support and security updates.
