IBM is teaching its Watson technologies to better understand the English language in an effective way. The end goal here is to help organisations crunch a huge amount of data in relatively short periods of time. And in order to achieve this, AI needs to have a good grasp of the English language , which includes the proper use of idioms.

This new tech represents the first commercialization of IBM’s Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities of IBM Research’s Project Debater. The company plans on integrating Project Debater into Watson this year with a focus on exploiting natural language. This includes Advanced Sentiment Analysis, Summarization and Advanced Topic Clustering.

Organisations can use this tech to create their own AI models that can sift through a multitude of documents/contracts then classify the necessary clauses. Summarization allows the system to analyze a countless number of articles, blogs and other data to produce short and concise summaries of the originals.

ESPN Fantasy Football uses Watson Discovery and Watson Knowledge Studio to analyze game data for each day during the entire season, then offer fantasy football players real-time insights. KPMG, a major accounting firm, leverages Watson’s services to analyze and review documents quickly to minimize disruption to clients’ businesses.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg because IBM’s tech can be used for a multitude of functions, which can be re-purpose to suit the individual needs of the business world. Eventually, IBM’s Watson will help rid professionals of the tedium that accompanies manual labor and allow them to focus on more pressing matters.
