Folding screen displays are the way forward, just ask Lenovo. The company has unveiled a hybrid laptop that is literally, all-screen. It’s called the ThinkPad X1 Fold and the objective here was to combine the functionality of full-fledged laptop with the practicality of a tablet.

Lenovo worked with Intel to produce a machine that is constructed from lightweight alloys and carbon fibre. The hinge mechanism uses a multi-link system that Lenovo says helps to reduce the stress exerted on the display itself. In fact, the 13.3-inch pOLED display underwent extensive durability tests to verify its toughness.

When setup as a laptop, the top half of the screen becomes the display, while the bottom section turns into a virtual keyboard. Alternatively, you could use Lenovo’s purpose-built, physical one, which can be placed directly on top of the second screen.

The idea behind the X1 Fold, is to create a computing device that can ‘do it all’. The device can function as a huge tablet, a slim laptop or a svelte fullscreen monitor with pen support. Weighing less than 2.2 pounds/ 1kg and this niche device is powered by Intel Core processors, but we don’t know which ones.

Lenovo will be shipping the X1 Fold to customers in mid-2020 with Windows 10 preinstalled. Later on, the company plans on shipping it with Windows 10X to achieve an ‘enhanced foldable user experience’.
