Maps Gets Wheelchair Accessibility Information

Google is attempting to make wheelchair accessible places, easier to find through its Maps app. Its part of a new feature called “Accessible Places”, which when switched on within Google Maps, a wheelchair icon is displayed to indicate accessible entrance, places with accessible seating, restrooms or parking.

In addition to this, if a certain location doesn’t have an accessible entrance, the app will show that information too. Google says that it now has wheelchair accessibility information for more than 15 million places around the world. And the Search giant attributes this milestone to the efforts of local guides, businesses and others who have contributed said information.

The feature also makes it easier for anyone to contribute wheelchair accessibility information to Google Maps. This will go a long way to helping those using wheelchairs, pushing strollers, older adults with tired legs and people hauling heavy items. The added convenience will allow for quicker and more efficient trips to stores and places of business.

In order to use the wheelchair accessibility feature, you will need to update your Google Maps app to the latest version. Then head to Settings >> Accessibility, and turn on “Accessible Places”. It’s available to Android and iOS users, and the latter will also be able to contribute accessibility information with an upcoming app update.
