The United States Army is looking to improve its effectiveness on the battlefield with the adoption of Microsoft’s augmented reality headsets. Called the IVAS (Integrated Visual Augmentation System) headset, the goal is to provide US soldiers with information that overlays their field of view.

This will give them an edge on the battlefield and allow troops to function more effectively. The United States Army confirmed its interest in adopting this tech by approving the move from rapid prototyping to production and rapid fielding of the new IVAS headset. Microsoft has been working with the U.S. Army over the past two years on said project.

IVAS is supposed to provide soldiers with “enhanced situational awareness, enabling information sharing and decision-making in a variety of scenarios”. This is a tremendous opportunity for Microsoft to show what their HoloLens technology has to offer the U.S. armed forces.

That said, HoloLens tech has a variety of applications especially when it comes to R&D or scaling operations on the manufacturing floor. It provides users with real time data that they can use to communicate with colleagues or customers around the world. It offers a form of collaboration that can help reduce the frame dedicated towards prototyping.
