Motorola to delay launch of new Razr

Motorola has announced that it will delay the launch of its $1,500 foldable smartphone due to unexpected demand. The news was reported in a Fortune article where it was also stated that the delay wasn’t due to manufacturing issues like that experienced by Samsung.

The new Razr is in such high demand that the US based smartphone company was simply caught off guard and isn’t able to cope with the numbers to confidently launch the phone in January. The company also stated that it needs to reassess its output figures to ensure that there are enough Razrs to go around.

Previously, Samsung also chose to delay the launch of its own foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold. But, unlike Motorola, the Korean electronics giant ran into manufacturing issues, and as such, needed more time to improve its processes.

The Motorola Razr was received with far less skepticism because its foldable screen features an ingenious mechanism that allows it to bend at a more practical angle. In turn, this reduces the visibility of the crease caused by the fold. This isn’t the case with Samsung’s device, which has to work with a more rigid design.

Samsung’s device has an obvious crease that can be seen and felt. Early adopters ran into screen problems shortly after taking ownership of their revolutionary new devices. This coupled with the lofty asking price, deterred many from taking the plunge and buying one.
