Microsoft has launched a new pair of headphones for the Xbox gaming community. It’s called the Xbox Wireless Headset and it’s supposed to have best-in-class audio and chat performance as well as being comfortable to wear. During gaming sessions, its custom audio tech help offload some of the audio computing tasks from the system’s CPU.

These new headphones have spatial sound processing, which helps to improve the overall audio quality during a gaming session. Microsoft says that the device was conceived to provide affordable but high quality headphones for Xbox customers around the world .

The sleek design, matte black colour scheme and signature green ring outlining each ear cup, screams gaming headphones. Polyurethane leather is used to line each earcup and a substantial amount of padding is fitted to the adjustable headband for good cushioning and accommodate a wide variety of head sizes.

There’s support for industry-leading spatial sound technologies including Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone. And with them, the headphones are supposed to provide better ‘audio precision’ and a more immersive gaming experience. Clarity of both loud and subtle sounds are supposed to be good too.

Microsoft has fitted the new headset with dual beamforming microphone elements that focus on speech audio vs. surrounding sound. Its voice isolation feature helps the mic pick up a user’s voice instead of ambient sounds. The auto-mute feature turns off the mic when nothing is said. Alternatively you could also press the mute button.

“The team took a human-centered approach to design a headset that removes the unnecessary distractions so that players can focus on the game and their friends,” said Scott Wang, the Senior Design Researcher working on the new Xbox Wireless Headset.

There’s also a light indicator, that lets users know when the mic is active, which is a nice touch. The rotating earcup dials can be used to adjust the volume and game/chat audio balance with just a simple turn. And the headphones itself can be paired wirelessly with any number of consoles, and PCs.

On a full charge, the Xbox Wireless Headset will provide 15 hours of battery life (3 hours to fully charge). But the device also has a flash charge feature that provides 4 hours of battery life when charged for 30 minutes. Priced at $99 USD, the new headphones will be available to purchase worldwide beginning on March 16.
