OPPO Releases Reno 7 5G & Reno 7 Pro 5G, AI Focused Phones
February 22, 2022OPPO has launched two new phones at its event today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It showed the Reno 7 5G and the Reno 7 Pro 5G. Both phones feature a svelte silhouette and interesting color scheme made possible by the Laser Direct Imaging (LDI) effect. The former features contemporary aesthetics shared by the rest of its family of devices.
The Pro on the other hand, features a more angular, industrialized look that is akin to that of Apple’s latest iPhones. We don’t know if that’s the look OPPO was aiming for, but the design does look polished with an impressive AMOLED display that stretches to all 4 corners. Both phones rely heavily on AI to power various camera functions – but more on that later.
Overall, the Reno 7 5G is about 7.81 mm thick and approximately 173g in weight. The Reno 7 Pro 5G, on the other hand measures 7.45mm thick and 180g in weight. The former gets a 6.4-inch, 90Hz AMOLED display while the latter has a 6.5-inch, 90Hz AMOLED one.
They are powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 900 5G SoC and MediaTek Dimensity 1200-MAX flagship-level 5G-integrated SoC on the Reno7 5G (8GB RAM and 256GB storage) and Reno7 Pro 5G (12GB RAM and 256GB storage) respectively. Both phones benefit from RAM expansion tech, where storage space can be temporarily used to increase the memory limit.
Both phones get the same 4,500mAh battery that supports 65W SUPERVOOC charging, Super Power Saving Mode and Super Nighttime Standby. They can be charged to 100% in 31 minutes, and due to said power saving mode, can prolong service life even when the battery is running low.
The Reno 7 5G gets a 64MP HD main camera, a 118-degree Ultra Wide-Angle camera, and a macro camera. The phone is able to focus on objects that are just 4cm away. At the front is a 32MP camera.
The Reno 7 Pro 5G gets a 50MP main camera powered by a flagship IMX766 sensor, alongside an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro camera. It’s 32MP selfie camera (IMX709) was co-developed by OPPO and Sony, is supposed to be able to capture 60% more light than standard RGGB sensors while reducing noise by up to 35%.
The Pro’s IMX766 sensor with a large 1/1.56-inch sensor size makes use of technology like All Pixel Omni-Directional PDAF and DOL-HDR. As such, it can capture high-quality selfie videos with enhancements made to the skin, texture and contrast for both photos and videos.
Here are some of the more noteworthy Features to look forward to:
Portrait Mode – Capture photos with shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh light spots in the background. Said depth of field can be customized based on user preference for both front and rear cameras. The phone also lets you choose between 25 different aperture sizes ranging from F0.95 to F16.
OPPO claims that the AI algorithm is able to simulate different optical focal lengths to create a depth of field effects that mimic that of a wide aperture DSL lens. There are also extra photo enhancements that help detect and preserve skin texture tone, but you can still make your own adjustments.
Bokeh Flare Portrait Video – through the use of image processing algorithms, it can make real-time adjustments to allow subjects to appear natural and bright, this includes skin tone detection and preservation as well as the inclusion of an entire palette of retouching effects. Users can also create unique bokeh flares in the background.
AI Highlight Video – Lighting is adjusted to ensure that both background and foreground can be captured clearly. Live HDR and Ultra Night Video algorithms of AI Highlight Video are enabled automatically when shooting video on the rear camera. As such, users can capture clearer and brighter videos in low lighting conditions without manual adjustments.
AI Color Portrait Video – It allows the phones to automatically detect the subject in the video and help retain the original color while the rest of the image is turned into black and white.
Dual-View Video – Use both front and rear cameras simultaneously to capture videos
Portrait Retouching – It detects different people within a video and applies different retouching effects based on identified traits.
AI Frame Stabilizer – monitors system performance and temperature to ensure the phone is performing to match the gameplay. Quick Startup keeps frequently-played games alive in the background, enabling users to jump into a game instantly.
Air Gestures – users can answer and mute phone calls, or control popular apps by gesturing with their hands without touching the phone.
Anti-Peeping – for Notifications hides notification content if sensing that someone else is looking at the phone
