PayPal Holdings, Inc. announced that they have partnered with Uber Technologies, Inc. to provide free or reduced priced rides to vaccination sites in the U.S., in an effort to remove transportation barriers to vaccination. In December 2020, Uber has committed up to ten million rides for free or discounted in an effort to eliminate the obstacle of transportation when receiving vaccines.

PayPal has promised a $5 million corporate donation to cover additional free or discounted rides as well as working together with Uber to explore ways to mobilize customers who may be interested in contributing towards the vaccine.

Today, the White House issued a call to action for corporations to support national vaccination efforts. In order to improve access to vaccines, Uber, PayPal and Walgreens are creating a significant coalition, focusing particularly on underserved communities.

PayPal’s CEO, Dan Schulman, stated that in the past year, the company has been deploying its products, services and resources to help its customers and communities manage the pandemic’s effects. Through this collaboration, we will deliver meaningful impact and forge a path to an inclusive recovery by making sure transportation is not an obstacle to vaccine access, especially for those from under-resourced communities.

With PayPal’s extensive knowledge of customer mobilization, Uber is working with PayPal to discover ways to engage PayPal’s giving platform to support vaccination efforts. Local Initiatives Support Corporation and PayPal Giving Fund will partner together to encourage individuals to give what they can, while PayPal Giving Fund will take the lead on distributing funds to local partners.

The PayPal platform supports over 600,000 nonprofits with fundraising, with consumers and merchants contributing more than 377 million to charitable efforts all over the world. PayPal partners with organizations across the country to support underserved communities most afflicted by the pandemic.

The Paycheck Protection Program provides access to small businesses owned by women and minority members, which often struggle to obtain financial financing from traditional financial institutions. PayPal will also provide $535 million to support businesses and communities that are Black and minority owned within the U.S. A part of this commitment was to empower the minority-owned businesses on the ground and connect them with high-need communities. In addition, grants were made to nonprofit organizations working in these areas throughout the nation.

This coalition effort between Uber and PayPal, Walgreens, National Urban League, National Action Network, and Morehouse School of Medicine has so far included partnerships with PayPal, Walgreens, National Urban League, National Action Network, and the Morehouse School of Medicine. PayPal and Uber have pledged to continue building a broad coalition of organizations committed to enabling grassroots transportation reform.
