Qualcomm has fettled with last year’s flagship chip, the Snapdragon 865+ to develop a ‘boosted’ mobile platform that it calls the Snapdragon 870 5G. It has the same Kryo 585 CPU but upgraded to a clock speed of up to 3.2Ghz. The updated 870 is supposed to build upon the strengths of the 865+ and deliver an overall increase in performance.

Improved gaming experience and supplemented by support for 5G sub-6GHz and mmWave and AI tech, the 870 will power a selection of high end devices. The company says that we can expect to see manufacturers such as Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi integrate this ‘rehashed’ chip into their upcoming devices.

“Building upon the success of Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus, the new Snapdragon 870 was designed to address OEM and mobile industry requirements,” said Kedar Kondap, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

It also incorporates the 5th gen Qualcomm® Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engine, which includes the Qualcomm® Hexagon™ 698 Processor with Hexagon Tensor Accelerator. And with the inclusion of WiFi 6, the company hopes it will deliver performance where it matters. It’s halo is still the 888, which powers Samsung’s latest S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra.

As such, the 870 may play second fiddle to the 888, powering high end devices that sit slightly below the flagship models. If you would like to know more check out the specifications here.
