In a recent Facebook post, Rockstar has confirmed that developed has begun on the next iteration of its highly acclaimed Grand Theft Auto franchise. Fans of the gaming series have been anxiously waiting for confirmation of GTA 6’s existence.

The game publisher’s official post said the following:

“With every new project, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we’ve previously delivered. We’re pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the series is underway.”

“We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”

Frustration among fans of the franchise has been building in recent years due to the lack of information on Rockstar’s part about GTA 6. The current game, GTA V was launched in 2013 and remains the longest serving game of the GTA series without a successor.

GTA V has been kept relevant due to its online gameplay, filled with missions involving all sorts of illegal and illicit activities involving the criminal underworld. Though GTA Online is based on the backdrop of the single player story mode, the player assumes the role of lead protagonist.

From the get-go, players get to create a character that will represent them in the game. Through the use of game tools, said characters can be made to resemble the respective player or anyone else. On top of this, they can be skinned with a plethora of apparel to suit their individual personality.

Then, they are let loose in the game to go fort and build their criminal empire through various means made possible via missions/heists. GTA V has seen regular updates and DLC additions over the years, which have helped keep it relevant and help churn the Rockstar cash machine.

Though the game publisher continues to remain coy on the possible roadmap on the launch of GTA 6, many believe that the new game may be revealed to the public sometime next year, though that remains to be seen.
