Samsung has acknowledged an issue affecting certain Galaxy device, and its seriousness depends on how much you value your privacy. Apparently, a problem affecting the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor has comprised its ability to authenticate only registered fingerprints.

When affected devices’ displays are overlayed with protective silicone screens found with most third party casings, a 3- dimensional patterns seem to appear, which confuses the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor causing it to readily unlock for just about anyone. This compromises the high level of security that said devices are touted to possess.

That said, a stopgap solution has been identified to circumvent the problem. Samsung is advising users with a Galaxy Note10/10+ and S10/S10+/S10 5G phones, to remove said covers and delete all existing fingerprints as well as newly registered fingerprints.

The smartphone giant is also asking customers to refrain from using such cases/protectors until it has a fix in place, which should be out by early next week. And once you do get this update, be sure to completely scan your fingerprints, so that all portions, which also include the center and corners, are successfully captured.

If your phone is affected by this problem, it would be wise to forgo the fingerprint authentication method and instead rely on a number pin or a pattern to unlock your device. admittedly, This is a major egg on face moment for Samsung who is still reeling from the ridicule brought about by the Galaxy Note 7’s infamous battery issue.

Thankfully, the company has acknowledged the problem earlier on, and will be able to fix this gaffe by next week. Till then, please exercise caution when using your phone in public, because, if it were to fall into the wrong hands, the secure ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, won’t be able to provide much protection!
