Samsung Galaxy Flip4 & Fold4: What You Need To Know

Samsung has finally taken the covers of its latest generation foldables: Fold4 and Flip3. Both phones are similar in appearance to the devices that they replace safe for minor cosmetic tweaks, here and there. That said, these changes, no matter how minute they are perceived to be, add up to an overall look that feels more refined, well thought out and slightly more stylish.

Galaxy Flip4
It has a more industrialized look to it, allowing the device to fall in line with the S22 flagship line up. The angular contours provide it with a slightly more sophisticated look without detriment to the playful nature of its interesting color schemes. The Folding crease at the middle of screen is less visible compared to the Flip3, which should improve the user experience.

The folding hinge is also slimmer, which allows the phone to fold flat on itself, instead creating an arc, which was the case with the Fip3. This allows it to feel more compact when folding, which in turn reduces the size of the bulge when it’s placed in your pocket. The Hazed back glass and glossy metal frames add to the overall appeal too.

Users can fully customize the Cover and Main Screen with Galaxy themes. This includes fonts, icons and the overall design. Besides this, you can create your own Cover Screen with new clock designs and backgrounds with images, GIFs and videos.

In addition to that, the screen bezels seem to have shrunk slightly but you still get the same 6.7-inch display as before. Battery capacity has increased to 3,700mAh, which is slightly larger than the predecessor’s 3,300mAh one. And there’s support for Super Fast Charging, which allows you to charge up to 50% in just 30 minutes.

Flex mode and Quick Shot are still available but now you are able to take selfies in Portrait Mode and see a preview of the actual picture. . You can make calls, reply to texts, control the SmartThings scene widget or unlock your cover from teh Cover Screen.

Powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and improved camera hardware. The new Flip4 is supposed to produce better picture quality, regardless of how it’s used. But we will have to test this to verify its accuracy.

Galaxy Fold4
Though a spitting image of its predecessor, the Fold4 features a slimmer hinge, narrower screen bezels and lighter overall weight compared to the Fold3. The main screen is still 7.6-inch in size (120Hz adaptive refresh rate), but the crease is less visible and so is the under display camera. A new scatter-type sub-pixel arrangement helps obscure the view of the front camera.

It’s more of a pocket computer now, thanks to the Taskbar that provides a similar layout to a regular PC. It offers access to favourite and recent apps as well as allow for better multitasking through the help of swipe gestures.

Samsung worked with Google and Microsoft to improve overall multitasking. Google apps like Chrome and Gmail support drag and drop for better copy and pasting of links, photos and other files between apps.

Google Meet allows for better virtual co-activities for watching YouTube videos or when playing games. Microsoft Office and Outlook, provide more information on screen, which allows for better productivity and multitasking.

Despite wishing and praying, the Fold4 doesn’t come with a Note-like stylus. Instead, you still have to use an external S Pen, but functionality has been improved. This allows for better drawings, notetaking and other features.

The upgraded 50MP wide lens and 30x Space Zoom one, allow for better Zooming, capturing of pictures, Dual Preview and Rear Camera Selfie shots.

Both Flip4 and Fold4 get Armor aluminum frames and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ for the front and rear. They are also rated for IPX8 water resistance, which should allow you to get them slightly wet without worrying about water damage.

The Galaxy Z Flip4, Z and Fold4 will be available for pre-order beginning August 10 with general availability starting August 26 in select countries.
