Samsung Galaxy S21 & 21+, Evolution Not Revolution

Samsung’s latest flagships are finally here. Since we covered the S21 Ultra in a previous article, in this one, we are going to take look at the S21 and S21+. These lower tier Galaxy S devices forgo the sophisticated camera of the Ultra for a toned-down trio that should get the job done. Like the renders suggested, the assembly is encapsulated in unique toned casing that seems to lap over the rear shell.

It’s an interesting design, and is one that gives the S21 Series a very unique look. Their screen sizes remain at 6.2-inches and 6.7-inches respectively, however the Super AMOLED, 120Hz displays are completely flat, as opposed to last year’s curved displays. Unlike the Ultra, both phones only come with 8GB RAM, its adequate, but unbecoming of a flagship.

Samsung says that they have improved 8K Snap, which allow you to take better photos and video footage. Super Steady, helps iron out camera shakes at an improved 60fps, and the addition of Director’s View lets you select the best shots for a story. You can also take pictures with the front and rear cameras at the same time, a novelty that will wear off, eventually.

The cameras are backed by improved software, which includes Space Zoom and. Portrait Mode (better AI). The 30x zoom uses AI tech to keep the subject in focus and ensure that decent quality shots are captured. There’s also virtual studio lighting and AI background effects to make sure the subject pops from the frame.

Apart from this, there’s Samsung Knox Vault, the company’s proprietary security platform. Private, share gives you control over who gets access to the content you send, and how long it’s available. The S21 is designed to work well with the SmartThings Find. And working with the new Galaxy SmartTag Bluetooth locator, it will help you find misplaced items.

The new S21 and S21+ phones are an evolutionary update compared to their predecessors. Those who were expecting something revolutionary, were sadly mistaken. Mind, these are amazing phones that feature the latest and greatest chipsets that are available to Android phones. But I have an inkling that Samsung is holding out on us, because of its upcoming foldable phones.
