Samsung’s new foldable clamshell smartphone makes a solid case for the importance of folding phones. It addresses a fundamental flaw associated with most modern smartphones – size. Screen real estate defines the usefulness of a smartphone. The larger the display, the more productive a user can be while on the move.

The Z Flip3 has a larger than average 6.7-inch main display, yet when folded, occupies about half the space needed by a Galaxy A52. The A52 is a mid-range device with less powerful hardware. In comparison, Samsung’s foldable phone features flagship hardware and a killer, two-tone colour combination.

It’s available to purchase in four main colours: Green, Cream, Lavender and black. However, the colour options include Grey, White and Pink if you choose to purchase the phone on Samsung.com. If you do choose to purchase the device, what do you get inside the box?

The packaging consists of a subtle, matte black box with contrasting shades of the same colour. It’s “lager-than-life” letter Z, is difficult to miss, even from far away. And like the S21+, the Flip3’s box is considerably slimmer than that of lower end smartphones.

Once you uncover the inner section of the box, you’re greeted by the Z Flip3, laid out on the top, in all its unfolded splendor. Our unit has a cream colour scheme. In person, the glossy finish adds to the “over-the-top” appeal that this phone seems to exude. I have a penchant for anything lavender, but the cream and black colour scheme suits this phone best.

Directly underneath is a smaller black box that contains the instructions manual and warranty literature, which many of us would probably ignore until something goes awry, but I digress. Tucked deeper inside, is the USB Type-C cable and SIM ejection tool. Now, if you’re hoping for there to be more to it than this, you’re probably going to be left disappointed.

The Z Flip3 doesn’t come with a pair of wired earphones or a charging brick. I can do without the former, but the latter is considerably more important, especially to users who are upgrading from a lower end phone. Fortunately, the phone only supports a maximum of 15W (fast charging), which is what most of us have lying at home.

If you have a less powerful charger, this could be the best time to upgrade because a 15W power brick is relatively inexpensive to purchase. However, I would recommend that you ignore said charger and opt for a wireless one instead, because the convenience that it offers far outweighs the mediocre charging speed. The Flip3 supports a maximum of 10W for wireless charging.

Though 10W may not sound like much, especially in this day and age, the Flip3 only comes with 3,300mAh batteries (total). As such, you won’t feel like you’re losing out on much if you choose to do away with the 15W wired option.

As for earphones, You could splurge on the newly launched Galaxy Buds2, which is a great option for people who want an above average pair of wireless earphones. However, you can still consider purchasing older options like the Buds Live and Buds Pro, which are still available to purchase on e-merchant sites like Lazada and Shopee.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip3 5G might not be to everyone’s liking, but to those of us who appreciate the practicality aspect of a foldable device, it could prove to be a game changer. It’s priced at RM3,999 which is considerably lower than the original Flip’s RM5,888 retail price. Granted, this is still an expensive phone, but it’s one many of us will hopelessly lust after for months to come.

We’ve been testing this phone extensively this past week, and I’m happy to report that it addresses several qualms we had with the original Flip. Stay tuned for the in-depth review, which should be out within the next few days.
