Smartphones usually last for about 3-5 years, but that also depends on how well they are kept and the frequency of which their batteries are charged. The gradual decline in performance may not be noticeable at first, but when the tell-tale signs appear more frequently, this can be a cause for frustration.

Unbeknownst to most Samsung users, the company has baked-in software that not only helps troubleshoot problems but provides user support, feedback and diagnostics information. It’s an app called Samsung Members and was introduced in 2016.

If you were to use the Diagnostics check option within the app, the software will simultaneously test 27 features of the device that includes battery status, camera functionality, wireless charging, face recognition and S Pen connectivity. To do this, tap on the Support Tab in Samsung Members, then choose View Tests and select Test all.

The Diagnostics button can be found in the Battery and device care option within Device settings. Through the use of these diagnostic results, users can access specific FAQs for troubleshooting tips. Samsung can also provide in-depth responses if users choose to send them errors on selected issues.

Samsung Members is one of several ways the company is supporting the right to repair initiative. It’s a movement that demands that companies provide adequate freedom to users and third-party repair shops to mend problems instead of having to rely solely on the manufacturers. This can prolong the lifespan of devices and allow users to choose when to replace them.

Samsung says that it continually improves the Members app through software updates. It’s also implementing customer feedback to ensure simple in-app experiences. The August update brought easy to read guides and visual information that guides users on how to complete the Diagnostics check.

A new sensor test evaluates whether the Flex mode on Galaxy foldables is working properly as well as providing new SIM card error diagnosis capabilities. Other features include those for facial recognition and biometric scans. If you are having trouble registering your face or fingerprints, the UI leads you to the necessary steps or provides troubleshooting tips.

Besides Samsung Members, the company has also extended its support program for older devices. More recent Galaxy devices will see 3 major OS updates and 5 years of security updates before being put out to pasture. This will allow users to keep their phones for longer without having to worry about security vulnerabilities.
