Samsung and Mercedes-Benz have collaborated to connect the smart home to smart cars. The idea here is to be able to control your home appliances from the comfort of your car. The first vehicle to have this new technology will be the newly launched Mercedes-Benz S-Class. SmartThings, the Korean giant’s IoT arm, is responsible for the tie-up.

This new partnership aims to simplify the car-to-home experience and allow accelerated adoption of such tech. Occupants of compatible cars can use their voice to control their smart devices at home. They can do this with their lights, locks, thermostats, electric outlets, garage door openers, sensors, and home security systems.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class owners can use the MBUX integrated voice assistant to take control of their devices at home. They can do this by saying, “Hey Mercedes, did I forget to turn off my lights at home?” or “Hey Mercedes, is anyone at home”. The manufacturer’s helpful Voice Assistant is being used to help combat distracted driving, by allowing voice based automation.

“SmartThings is focused on accelerating the creation of an open IoT ecosystem. Powering car-to-home and home-to-car capabilities is the next logical step in that journey, and we’re thrilled to bring SmartThings to an important environment,” said Ralf Elias, global vice president, IoT & Business Development at SmartThings.

SmartThings is one of several companies pushing for more efficient home automation through the use of IoT (internet of things) devices. It’s an open platform brings together devices, developers, and services to offer one of the largest ecosystems of integrated devices. It currently connects 10 million homes, 120 certified brands and more than 62 million active users.
