Samsung has just announced its blisteringly fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid state drive (SSD). Called the 980 PRO, the M.2 form factor drive is capable of incredibly quick response times, which are meant for professionals who work with 4K and 8K content as well as those with high-end workstations and gaming consoles.

It utilizes a custom Elpis controller, V-NAND and DRAM, whichhave been designed in-house, and that take advantage the higher bandwidth that PCIe 4.0 offers. This allows the 980 PRO to provide sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and 5,000 MB/s respectively, as well as random read and write speeds of up to 1,000K IOPS.

Unlike conventional drives that use external copper heatsinks for heat dissipation, the 980 Pro employs a nickel coating on the controller and a heat spreader label on the back. This provides for more efficient thermal management, allowing the engineers to keep the entire package as compact as possible.

In addition to this, Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard technology keeps the drive’s temperature at the optimal levels to minimize performance fluctuations. The Samsung SSD 980 PRO is available in 1TB, 500GB and 250GB models. They will be available to order, beginning this month. A larger 2TB model will be made available towards the end of the year.

Prices for the 980 PRO start at $89.99 for the 250GB model. For more information about this drive or other Samsung products, visit samsung.com/SSD or samsungssd.com
