Schneider Electric Ready For Digital-First Future

Schneider Electric, a pioneer in the field of digital energy management and automation, recently released a new report addressing how digitized and smart applications will be powered in the future. Increasing electricity demand associated with the digital economy is projected to increase by more than half by 2030, according to a report titled Digital Economy and Climate Impact.

Nevertheless, a decarbonizing electricity system would not increase emissions more than 26 percent by that time. A continuation of efforts on the component and system levels to achieve efficiencies on the IT and energy side are recommended by Schneider Electric TM Sustainability Research Institute in order to mitigate this rise in emissions.

The Schneider Electric Boston Hub hosted a virtual media event at which the report was released, highlighting how edge computing is less efficient from a PUE standpoint than hyperscale data centers.

“When the world logged on, internet traffic soared,” said Pankaj Sharma, Schneider Electric’s EVP, Secure Power. Schneider Electric Sustainability Institute analysis puts to rest many of the worst-case scenario predictions that IT-related electricity use will double every five years. However, as an industry we need to remain vigilant in finding new ways to reduce power consumption, while still guaranteeing resiliency as digital keeps life moving forward.”

Schneider Electric released the study, as well as updated its EcoStruxure IT data center infrastructure management software, Galaxy VL 3-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and introduced its industry-leading single-phase UPS, the APC™ Smart-UPS™ Ultra. The new products and technologies are designed to make IT and data center infrastructure more resilient and to meet sustainability goals.

Managing hybrid data centers and edge IT environments becomes easier with EcoStruxure IT software updates
The new report analyzes how digital consumption is creating a more complex hybrid operating environment, including enterprise, cloud and edge data centers. To address these management challenges, Schneider Electric has announced updates to its EcoStruxure IT software for greater efficiency and reliability.

Enhancements to remote management:
This update, in combination with previously released software insights on device security health, enables the user to identify and resolve faulty devices or configurations in a matter of clicks, ensuring that their hybrid IT environment remains secure.

Monitoring of the environment is made more effective:
Users have access to environments, analytic tools, and data center and IT deployments anywhere, anytime. As a result of this update, NetBotz cameras 750 and 755 can be configured remotely quickly and efficiently, providing increased security across critical infrastructure.

Remote capacity planning and modeling improved:
Now, EcoStruxure IT Advisor users can remotely compare an unlimited number of racks and easily identify available capacity, view deployed assets and their dependencies.

Enhanced safety as well as space savings are enabled by the redesigned Galaxy Lithium-ion battery solution
Galaxy VL feature modular and scalable 3-phase UPS in the 200 kW to 500 kW range and with up to 99 percent efficiency. They are high-density and sustainable energy storage solution for data centers, industrial processes, and critical infrastructure. Integrated into the full Galaxy V Series, the cabinets can be combined to create one unit.

By reducing battery footprint and weight by as much as 70 percent, this battery solution offers more effective use of space. The cabinets allow for recharges that exceed VRLA by two to three times as well as faster installation and enhanced system a availability with redundant self-powered internal power supplies.

Compared to VRLA batteries, lithium-ion batteries double battery life, lower installation and maintenance costs, and require less cooling as they operate at higher temperatures. A real-time battery management system enhances visibility and predictability, plus simplifies maintenance and increases operator safety.

Introducing APC’s Smart-UPS Ultra, the world’s smallest, lightest and most powerful single-phase UPS

Schneider Electric announced a separate UPS product at the event, the new APC Smart-UPS Ultra 3kW. With its small, modular form factor, the system offers IT pros and solution providers more power, flexibility, and intelligence designed to ease many of the challenges associated with deploying data centers across distributed environments.

A rack mount, tower mount, or wall/ceiling mount can be used to mount the Smart-UPS Ultra so that IT space is not limited. As part of the EcoStruxure Ready platform, this device provides data-driven tips to optimize performance and provides visibility anywhere, anytime, thanks to its Lithium-ion batteries that last for a long time.
