Sony Reverses Decision To End Support For PS3 and PS Vita

Sony has reversed its decision regarding the closing of its PlayStation store for PS3 and PS Vita devices. The original plan was to end support towards the end of this year, because the company was finding it tough to support older devices due to the need to channel more resources toward newer ones where the majority of its games are played on.

However, upon further reflection, the company has decided not to follow through with said plan. Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the announcement in an entry on the PlayStation Blog. Apparently, feedback from customers was a contributing factor in Sony’s change of heart.

“We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations,” said Ryan.

He added, “Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.”

The reversal only affects support for PS3 and PS Vita. Sadly, PSP commerce support will end on July 2, 2021 as planned. Customer support for the legacy platform may not have been as strong as that for the PSP Vita.

That said, it’s comforting to know that manufacturers like Sony, consider customer feedback before making important “game changing” decisions. This should keep many gamers happy, especially those of us who cherish our ‘legacy’ devices.
