Teen Introduces Former Inmates To Smartphones
October 26, 2020Jake Greenberg, a 16-year-old senior at Millennium High School in Manhattan, USA assists former prison inmates in learning to embrace smartphone technology. Via FreshStartPhones.com, an online portal for the Freshstart Phones non-profit, Jake receives donated smartphones that he then provides to former inmates.
As an assistant at a prisoner re-entry program in New York City, Jake was disappointed to learn that inmates reintroduced into society were carrying outdated flip-phones. He believed that providing them with proper smartphones would make a huge difference in their lives.
Jake then reached out to family and friends for them to donate their old devices. As the donations continued to come in, it spurred the creation of Freshstart Phones. He loves telling stories of how excited his clients are when their get their hands on a new smartphone. Many of these inmates were incarcerated before smartphones were introduced.
“Expecting former prison inmates to navigate a smartphone world without a decent smartphone is a cruel obstacle that makes reintegrating into society and creating a normal life much more difficult,” said Jake Greenberg.
Getting them acquainted with modern technology, will provide former inmates with a fighting chance of getting back on their feet. Jake’s noble quest, has already had an effect on several people’s lives. One such person is an older gentlemen named ‘Joe’, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease. This prevents him from operating his older flip-phone properly.
Jakes explains, “His hands shake so badly that typing on anything, much less a flip phone, is extremely challenging. When I received a donation of a smartphone programmed with a virtual assistant, I immediately reached out to Joe. He couldn’t believe that he no longer needed to rely on steady fingers to operate his smartphone.”
