Toshiba’s new 18TB Hard Drives Use Cutting-Edge Tech

Toshiba now offers an 18TB mechanical hard drive option with its N300 and X300 line of products. This high density drive uses Flux Control – Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) Technology. The focused flux allows more accurate writing, which leads to smaller magnetic area per bit and higher data densities compared to CMR HDDs.

Toshiba says that by utilizing this tech, it can offer an extra 12.5% of drive density, which allows the addition of 2TB to the company’s previous 16TB models. Both N300 and x300 drives (3.5-inch) use a proprietary 9-disk helium-sealed design. The former is marketed toward users who use a network-attached storage (NAS) with up to 8 drive bays. The drives are capable of spinning at 7,200rpm and use RV sensors to compensate for rotational vibrations.

The X300 is aimed at people who use high-end desktop workstations, game consoles and home media equipment. It also spins at 7,200rpm and uses a drive stabilisation mechanism for improved operational reliability. The N300 comes with a 3-year limited warranty while the X300 is offered with 2-year limited warranty. Both drives should hit shelves in Q4, 2021. For more information visit www.toshiba-storage.com.
