Update your iPhone 5 or 4s to avoid location and time issues

If you are still using an iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s as your daily driver, its best that you update your device to the latest supported version of iOS. According to Apple, if you haven’t done so by November 3, 2019, you device will not be able to keep an accurate GPS location or correct date and time for App Store, iCloud, email, and web browsing.

Cupertino says that this is due to a GPS time rollover issue that began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019. If you choose not to update by November 3rd, you will be required to back up and restore using a Mac or PC in order to update because over-the-air software updates and iCloud Backup will not work.

Here’s how to check for which version of iOS is on your device:
1. Open the settings app
2. Tap General, then tap About
3. Look for the number next to Software Version

If you have updated to the least software version, it should read 10.3.4 or 9.3.6, depending on which device you have.

Mind, this issue doesn’t only affect older iPhones. Certain iPad devices are also susceptible to this problem. Here is the list:
– iPad (4th generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular
– iPad mini (1st generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular
– iPad 2 Wi-Fi + Cellular (CDMA models only)
– iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular

Apple states that iPod touch models and iPads with WiFi only are not affected. If your device isn’t listed above, it won’t be affected by the issue either.

It’s best that you keep your iOS device updated with the latest software version to ensure better security and stability of the device, provided that said updates do not jeopardize normal operations.
