Want To Shut The World Out?: Get The Sony WH-1000XM4

As a tech reviewer, especially one who specializes in audio gear, I’m spoilt for choice when it comes to headphones. But despite the plethora of devices that land on my desk each week, my “go-to” pair of headphones is still the WH-1000XM4. It picks up where the WH-1000XM3 left off, offering crisp and clear audio music quality. The stellar ANC (active noise cancelling) tech, amplifies the experience further.

If you’re anything like me, then a good pair of headphones is a must have device. I’m constantly on the move, and oftentimes find myself camping out at the nearest fast food chain frantically thumping on my laptop keyboard as I try to hammer out articles or proposals.

Unfortunately COVID-19 has drastically made things worse. We have been forced indoors, and subjected to unrelenting disturbances from noisy neighbors, construction work and chatter of family members. Instead of improving our state of mind, work from home orders have exacerbated the problem.

And when it comes to crunch time, nothing is more valuable than the gift of pin drop silence. Sony’s WH-1000XM4 offers something quite close to this. Its intelligent noise cancelling tech is able to cancel out ambient sounds. And it remembers them, which makes it quicker to respond to them the second time around.

This coupled with its ability to pressurize each ear cup for a perfect seal, cocoons you in an invisible pseudo-soundproof room. It’s an eerie feeling, watching the world pass you by and not hearing a thing. It will take some time to get this idea, but in time, will prove to be invaluable. But placing your hand on the right earcup, pauses the feature and lets ambient sounds in.

It shuffles through these features seamlessly. In fact, after the initial setup process, the headphones sort everything out for you, leaving you the work of just turning the power on/off when needed. The moment you turn the WH-1000XM4 on, it sets everything up the way you’d like. All you have to do is just press play.

The audio quality is just as impressive. The lows, mids and highs are spot on. Each note or octave is somewhat distinguishable. It’s the only pair of wireless headphones besides the Bose QC35, I would pick instead of my wired ones. Audiophiles would agree, especially those of them who appreciate the practicality that it offers over traditional cans.

Though the WH-1000XM4 may not offer the same heart-thumping base as those from the Beats By Dre line, it does enough to accurately reproduce the most sophisticated music tracks. The clarity produced by its drivers are impressive to say the least. It’s perfect for people who have a penchant for instrumental music as well as those who prefer R&B.

You’d be hard pressed to find another pair of headphones that can do so much without skipping a beat. When it’s crunch time and you need some ‘alone time’ with your music. Sony’s WH-1000XM4 should be your preferred choice. The ANC capabilities alone are leaps and bounds ahead of the competition, and the music quality isn’t far behind.
