GSMA, the company responsible for the World Mobile Congress, has cancelled WMC 2020 in light of the current coronavirus epidemic. As a means to safeguard the health and safety of attendees and exhibitors, the event in Barcelona has been called off.

In a statement posted on the company’s website, John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA Limited said, “GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event.”

The World Mobile Congress has hosted one of the largest mobile events since 2006. Most of the who’s who of the tech world are usually in attendance. The growing concern regarding the Coronavirus outbreak, which originated in Wuhan, China has put the world on high alert.

Early last week, Sony announced that it would not attend this year’s WMC and instead, launch its products on YouTube, a first for the company. Several other big manufacturers eventually followed suit, leading GSMA to rethink this year’s event.
