Xiaomi have teamed up with Vivo and OPPO to develop a simplified file sharing platform for their smartphone users. It’s called the “Peer-to-Peer Transmission Alliance” and it’s cross-brand initiative that aims to improve file sharing between devices.

The feature will be baked into the phones’ software and can be used to share a wide range of files that include photos, videos, music and documents. Both Bluetooth and WiFi are utilized here. The former is used to initiate the pairing of both devices, while the latter is used for the actual data transfer.

This technology is said to establish a high-speed data connection but with low power consumption. Xiaomi also says that WiFi P2P sharing won’t interrupt your WiFi connection, which means it shouldn’t affect whatever it is that you are doing while the file transfer is taking place.

Both the sender and receiver need to have this file sharing feature turned on. Then, just tap the Share button for the selected file, select the receiving device, and tap Send. Theoretically that should initiate the file transfer with a transmission rate of up to 20MB/s.

Xiaomi hopes that more phone manufacturers join the P2P alliance to allow for a seamless file sharing experience across devices of various brands. This type of unification could bring about many benefits provided that all major manufacturers are open to the idea.

At this moment, this feature is compatible with Xiaomi devices running Android Pie with the exception of Redmi 6 Pro, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A, Redmi 7A, Redmi 7, Redmi S2, Redmi 8, Redmi 8A, Redmi Note 8, Redmi Note 8T. If you own an Oppo or Vivo, then you will need to wait for an announcement from them.
