Apple Invests In Construction Of Largest Wind Turbines

Apple has cemented its commitment in reducing its carbon footprint even further with the announcement to invest in wind turbines. This will see two of the world’s largest onshore wind turbines being built in Esbjerg, a town in Denmark. Standing 200 meters tall, they will be able to produce 62 gigawatt hours of electricity each year, which is enough to power 20,000 homes.

These wind turbines will power Apple’s data center in Viborg, a 45,000 square meter facility. It offers network support and data storage to its users across the region. The facility also supports Apple’s App Store, Apple Music, iMessage, Siri, and other services in Europe. The surplus in power produced by the turbines, are funneled back to the Danish grid.

“Combatting climate change demands urgent action and global partnership — and the Viborg data center is powerful proof that we can rise to this generational challenge,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives.

The recently completed solar arrays, one of Scandinavia’s largest, and the aforementioned wind turbines, supply power to Apple’s Viborg data centre. As such, it runs on 100% renewable energy. Though Cupertino’s businesses run on 100% renewable energy, the new wind turbines should push it towards its goal of achieving a net zero climate impact.
