Apple will be closing its stores in the US to protect them from looters, according to reports by CNET and 9to5Mac. Violent protests erupted across the US late last week following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police. Floyd, an African-American, is one of several men who have perished in the last few years after altercations with US police officers.

In light of Floyd’s death, many took to the streets to protests the actions of the police officer involved. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous individuals have seen this as an opportunity to involve themselves in unsavory acts that include looting nearby stores. And to shield its outlets from falling falling prey to said looters, Apple has chosen to shutter its stores once more.

In early March, just as its stores in China began to reopen, Cupertino decided to close its brick-and-mortar outlets across the US to help curb the spread of the Coronavirus. It was only recently that the company decided to reopen its stores due to the improving situation. But the unexpected chaos that stemmed from Floyd’s death has hampered the process somewhat.

Some of you may not be aware of this, but Apple has certain safety measures in place to prevent stolen devices from ever being used. 9to5Mac says that devices on showcase at Apple stores are bricked the moment they are disconnected from said stores’ Wi-Fi. This means that these stolen devices become mere paperweights the moment they are taken from their respective stores.
