Samsung’ Galaxy Z Fold2 has officially been launched in Malaysia and several other markets. It’s the follow up model to the original folding phable that took the world by storm. However, the fanfare of original phone was short lived due in part to several durability issues. It was a great concept, that was marred by an unreliable folding screen.

That is why the Fold 2, is Samsung’s shot at redemption. And based on first impressions, it appears as though some of said creases have been ironed out. This includes its folding structure, which Samsung calls the ‘CAM mechanism’. Similar in principle to that used in the Z Flip, it’s is considered as the third generation of the company’s folding hinge design.

It offers a reassuring ‘clank’ sound when folded into itself. But the mechanism also allows the Fold2 to remain open or stand on its own at an angle of 75 to 115 degrees. This allows users the flexibility of using multiple apps simultaneously. When unfolded completely, two different apps can be displayed on each side of the crease, mimicking the the functionality of dual displays.

The Z Fold2 can do more then just browse social media. The ‘Multi-Active Window’ feature can organize your apps as needed. The phone also allows you to drag and drop text, images and documents from one app to another for instant transfer. You can also use the split screen capture feature to take screenshots of each individual side.

The phone seems to be a little more refined than the original, borrowing design cues first seen on the Note20 series. Instead of the dainty screen of its predecessor, the new Fold has 6.2-inch AMOLED panel that stretches to all four corners of its front fascia.

When folded completely, this display is more than capable of functioning as the main screen. However, when more real-estate is required, the true value of the main 7.6-inch screen becomes apparent. It’s a pretty good panel with decent brightness but how durable it can be over time, remains to be seen. If you’re interested in buying one, it could set you back RM7,999.

As Samsung continues to perfect its foldable tech, we can expect to see more of such devices with refined hinges and folding screens continue to make their way into retail outlets. Here’s to hoping that the next generation Z Flip, offers the same level of refinement as that of the Z Fold2.
