Google’s new affordable smartphone, the Pixel 6a draws inspiration from its larger and better equipped siblings. As such it has the same candy bar design, metal frame and camera bar. The UI uses the updated Material You design, which personalizes the look and feel of the colors used in a selected theme.

The selfie camera is taken from the Pixel 6, but on the rear there’s still a dual camera setup that consists of a main and ultrawide lens. Despite being a less powerful phone, the 6a inherits some of the image processing features of its better equipped siblings. This includes Real Tone, which accurately represents a subject’s skin tone, Night Sight for low light photography and Magic Eraser.

Magic Eraser, in case you didn’t know, is a feature within Google Photos that can delete “distractions” in pictures. This means that people or objects in the background can be accurately selected and removed from a scene if needed. Now, the features let you change the color and shading to blend naturally with a setting to ensure that the focus is kept on the subjects.

Pixel 6a also gets the same speech recognition tech that includes Recorder, Live Caption and Live Translate that’s available with the Pixel 6 Pro. The phone is powered by Google Tensor, the company’s in-house chip. As such, it gets the same security architecture as the 6 Pro, including the Titan M2 security chip.

On battery saver mode, Google boasts that the 6a can last for up to 72 hours, which is a respectable feat. The company has also promised 5 years of security updates for the Pixel 6a and when it does go on sale on July 21st for USD449, the phone will be among the first to receive the latest Android 13 update.
