Corning Incorporated, the very people behind the Corning Gorilla glass, the very material that lines most of our phone screens, have come up with something stronger. It’s called Gorilla Glass Victus and is said to be far more resistant to scratches and breakage compared with the current standard, Gorilla Glass 6.

In their lab tests, the company says that Victus survived drop tests from a height of 2 meters when dropped on hard and rough surfaces. This is about twice the improvement for scratch resistance when compared to Gorilla Glass 6 (can survive drops of up to 1.6 meters).

John Bayne, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Consumer Electronics, said, “Dropped phones can result in broken phones, but as we developed better glasses, phones survived more drops but also showed more visible scratches, which can impact the usability of devices.”

Apparently, the company considered the feedback of 90,000 consumers before it went about building this new glass. And from the data received, Corning surmised that the importance of drop and scratch performance had nearly doubled over the span of 7 years.

Gorilla Glass can be found on more than 8 billion devices in the market. And through the years, its material has protected many a phone from horrific drops onto hard concrete floors. It’s a testament to the perpetual improvements to Corning’s materials, which have culminated into the Victus.
