IBM Reveals Next-Gen Processor

August 17, 2020 Off By Rowena Cletus

IBM has introduced its new 7nm processor meant to take on hybrid cloud computing workloads. The new chip, IBM POWER10, is a joint research effort between IBM and Samsung Electronics, and is said to be 3x more powerful and efficient compared to the POWER9.

Slated for release in the second half of 2021, the IBM chip is the first 7nm commercialized processor. It is able to cope with Multi-Petabyte Memory Clusters, utilizes new formula for memory inception and designed to improve cloud capacity for high workloads.

The POWER10 is designed to give users more dynamic register control. This will prove beneficial against cyberattacks that exploit vulnerabilities such as that experienced by Intel processors. IBM says this feature will enable its customers to build applications that are more resistant to attacks.

Here’s what to expect of the new chip:

  • POWER10 will deliver up to a 3x efficiency per socket.
  • Memory Inception allow any IBM POWER10 processor-based systems in a cluster to access and share each other’s memory, creating multi-Petabyte sized memory clusters.
  • POWER10 support users in workloads and OpenShift container density for hybrid cloud workloads compared to POWER9 based systems.
  • Hardware memory encryption for end-to-end security and faster cryptography performance due to additional AES encryption engines.
  • Embedded Matrix Math Accelerator which provides 10x, 15x and 20x faster AI inference for FP32, BFloat16 and INT8 calculations higher than POWER9 processor.
  • Provide new improved security with much higher density. This new formula able to prevent other containers in the same Virtual Machine (VM) from being affected.
  • Designed to enhance in-core AI inferencing capability without requiring additional specialized hardware.

IBM customers who rely on cloud solutions will benefit from memory inception. It offers the potential to drive costs and energy savings. This will enable them to offer more power but with fewer servers. As a result, they can lease fewer resources to meet their needs.

The POWER10, co-optimized for Red Gat OpenShift, will be tasked with handling the next generation of hybrid cloud solutions. It will be manufactured by Samsung Electronics using the its semiconductor tech with the use of IBM’s CPU designs.
