Keep Your WhatsApp Chats When Moving From iOS to Android

The inconvenience associated with migrating data from an iPhone to Android is nothing short of being overwhelming. But WhatsApp is trying to make this a little more bearable. The company now allows users to transfer chats from an iOS device to an Android one through the use of a USB-C lightning cable. It’s a straightforward solution to an age-old problem.

For now, this feature only works on newer Samsung devices. But WhatsApp says that it will make its way to more Android devices soon. While you will be allowed to transfer your personal messages, the same doesn’t apply to peer to peer payment messages, call history or display name.

This is what can be transferred:

  • Account Information
  • Profile Photo
  • Individual Chats
  • Group chats
  • Chat History
  • Media
  • Settings

Requirements for iOS to Android WhatsApp Migration:

  • Samsung SmartSwitch app version 3.7.22.1 or greater installed on your new device
  • WhatsApp iOS version 2.21.160.17 or greater on your old device
  • WhatsApp Android version 2.21.16.20 or greater on your new device
  • USB-C to Lightning cable (or equivalent adapters)
  • Use the same phone number on the new device as the old device.
  • Your new Android device must be factory new or reset to factory settings.

Step-by-Step Instructions to migrate from iPhone to Samsung device

  1. Connect the iPhone and Samsung smartphone to the USB-C to lightning cable
  2. Launch Samsung’s Smart Switch app and follow the instructions for iOS
  3. Scan the QR code display on the new phone using the iPhone’s camera
  4. Tap start on the iPhone and wait for the setup process to complete.
  5. Finish the setup process on the Samsung smartphone
  6. Then launch WhatsApp with the same phone number as that on the iPhone
  7. Tap import when prompted and wait for the transfer to complete

Bear in mind that this process doesn’t wipe the data from your iPhone. That needs to be done manually on said device. The USB-C to Lightning cable is used to prevent the data from being to the cloud, which is a frivolous ordeal. A wireless transfer would make more sense since it offers better convenience.
