Budget headphones don’t usually sound good. Especially when a pair is made by a relatively unknown manufacturer such as MPOW. Unlike names like Sony, Sennheiser and Audio-Technica, MPOW originates from a relatively obscure company founded in 2013.
Over the course of several years, it found its footing, recognized with several accolades including ones for design. That’s surprising considering how little we know of the brand and its various products. That said, we were pleasantly surprised by the MPOW H7. It’s a sturdy pair of headphones that come in four different colours, pink, black, grey and blue.
The Looks
Though it’s made from plastic, the entire device feels well-made. The ear cups swivel sideways to aid storage, and the cups themselves are soft and comfortable to use. A powdered-like grainy texture encases the cups’ outer shell, which promotes a better grip and adds to the sense of quality.
The H7 is reminiscent of Sony’s older headphones down to the button placement and relative feel. Wearing them for prolonged periods of time, isn’t much of a bother. It does a decent job of remaining firmly anchored to your ears, but not uncomfortably so. And on a full charge, you can expect close to 18 hours of battery life.
How Does It Sound?
But as good as it looks and feels on the ears, these attributes pale in comparison to the H7’s sound reproduction. It offers a rich serving of bass without much detriment to the mid and lows. It’s a feat that is difficult to pull off, especially at its price point. The H7 is extremely accommodating to the likes of hip & hop and R&B.
Mind, it is decent other genres too, and offers very little sound distortion for demanding music tracks. But its versatility extends beyond music. is, While on a call, you can choose to have the music paused or keep playing in the background while conversing with the person on the other end. This is a feature that is absent from most premium headphones.
This adds to the uniqueness of the H7. Not only is it good at reproducing music with a decent amount of depth, but can function as a Bluetooth headset as well. Surprisingly, the voice of the caller isn’t drowned by the the music playing in the background, in fact, it’s quite soothing. When on a call, the music fades into the background with more prominence given to the caller’s voice.
Going into this review, I expected very little. But was pleasantly surprised to find out how good the H7 really is. And that speaks volumes of its abilities. As a self-proclaimed audiophile, I wouldn’t mind clearing a spot on my shelf for this pair of MPOW headphones, despite the name.
So, what are the drawbacks? Well, there are a few but they aren’t worth mentioning considering the H7’s MSRP. I could be a bit of a stickler and say that the mids could have been a little more pronounced and that a slight echo can be heard at times, when you’re on a phone call. But these are minor niggles that you tend to forget after a week or two of use.
The MPOW H7 is one of the cheapest headphones that the company makes. The more expensive models feature better battery life, Active Noise Cancelling and more sophisticated drivers. But the H7 is good enough for those who want decent sound quality but do not have deep enough pockets to afford a pair of Sony headphones.
Should I Buy One
There are more sophisticated headphones out there. They sound better and offer better functionality that include Android or iOS app support. But if you’re looking for cheap pair of headphones but still want to enjoy good sound quality, then the MPOW H7 will not disappoint you. Regardless of the music genre, the H7 can play them all without falling afoul.
