Samsung Galaxy Watch4: It’s The People’s Smartwatch

August 31, 2021 Off By Naveen Victor

The rationale behind introducing two Galaxy Watch models simultaneously is sound in its foundation. These aren’t two separate watches, but are one and the same. Both owe their existence to the varying wrist sizes of the general population. The Galaxy Watch4 comes in 44mm and 40mm sizes while the Watch4 Classic comes in 46mm and 42mm sizes.

These watch diameters are suitable for a substantially large subset of smartwatch wearers, allowing Samsung to capture a large chunk of the market. It’s a bold move that could result in a windfall for the Korean giant. It happens to be the company’s most sophisticated watch yet. At the heart is a 3-in-1 sensor that uses a single chip to measure a variety of health metrics.

It’s basically made up of three health sensors, which measure Optical Heart Rate, Electrical Heart and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. In layman’s terms the Watch4 and Watch4 Classic can measure blood pressure, detect an AFib irregular heartbeat, blood oxygen level and calculate the wearer’s body composition.

The Body Composition tool provides users with a better understanding of their general health and fitness. It takes into account skeletal muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, body water and body fat percentage. In just 15 seconds, the watch can capture 2,400 data points. This makes it an appealing prospect to anyone who wants to get into shape or maintain a healthy lifestyle.

One reason why conventional analog watches come in various sizes is because each person is built differently. And as such we have varying wrist sizes due in part to one’s physique. The Watch4 Classic is the chunkier model with an oversized rotating bezel. It’ll appeal to people who want a smartwatch with the aesthetics that command attention.

The Watch4 on the other hand has a subdued overall look. Its subtle silhouette is reminiscent of the Watch Active2. Instead of a rotating bezel, it has a static one that responds to touch input, which may be to the liking of users who appreciate a minimalist look. This setup may prove to be less intrusive when trying to get a good night’s sleep.

Working with your Galaxy smartphone, the Watch4 is able to measure your sleep patterns. Your phone tells it how much you snore. This information is combined with your blood oxygen levels and sleep score to provide a more accurate picture of your sleep patterns. With proper guidance you can make adjustments to will help improve the quality of sleep that you experience each night.

This classifies the Watch4 and Watch4 Classic as wellness devices rather than glorified fitness trackers. And since they run WearOS, there’s a fairly large library of apps that can be downloaded from the Play Store. Compatible apps are automatically installed on the watch once you’ve downloaded them on your phone.

Relevant information that is saved on said smartphone such as do not disturb hours and blocked callers, are synced instantly. Auto Switch ensures that earbuds can toggle audio between your phone and watch. Besides the bezel and physical buttons, you can use hand gestures to accept or cancel a call as well as dismiss notifications and alarms.

On a single charge both watches offer 40 hours of battery life, which should be more than enough for most consumers. And thanks to quick charging tech, 30 minutes of charging can provide up 10 hours of battery life.

The Watch4 is priced at RM899 (40mm) or RM999 (44mm) while the Watch4 Classic can be purchased for RM1299 (42mm) or RM1399 (46mm). Besides watch size, Samsung is also catering to varying budgets. The reason fitness trackers are growing in popularity is due to how affordable they are compared to actual smartwatches.

Here, Samsung has done the impossible. It has made a flagship smartwatch accessible to the average Joe. Granted, RM899 is still a steep price to pay during this difficult period, but when you consider the features and health ‘coaching’ benefits it offers, the price tag seems justified.
