Samsung’s New Phones To Use Materials From Ocean-Bound Plastics

Samsung is recycling discarded fishnets that clutter our oceans. The company announced that it has developed a new material made from ocean-bound plastics including fishnets, that will make its way into various Galaxy devices. It’s part of the Korean giant’s Galaxy for the Planet initiate that aims to minimize its environmental impact and foster a sustainable future.

Moving forward, it plans to incorporate repurposed ocean-bound plastics throughout its entire product line. Samsung will shed more light on its sustainability plans at the upcoming Unpacked event taking place on February 9th. The end goal is to eliminate single-use plastics and use more eco-friendly materials like recycled post-consumer material (PCM) and recycled paper.

Our ocean isn’t just littered with plastic bottles and grocery bags, they are joined by more than 640,000 tons of fishing nets that are abandoned or discarded every year. Said waste can remain intact for centuries and are responsible for trapping and entangling marine life, damaging coral reefs and natural habitats and ending up in our food and water sources.

Expect more from Samsung about its eco-conscious efforts at the upcoming Unpacked event that will happen on February 9th at 10 a.m. EST. The event will also play host to the launch of the highly anticipated Galaxy S22 smartphones. Stay tuned for more.
