Sometimes, 8K TVs aren’t really equipped with 8K screens. Samsung wants to put an end to this misconception altogether. The Korean electronics giant has partnered with 8K Association (8KA) to establish a certification program that will help users distinguish 8K TVs from the lesser competition.

Not only will this alleviate concerns regarding 8K marketing lingo, but the program will enable Samsung to prove the quality of its stunning QLED 8K screens. It will be one of the first TVs to receive the certification this year. All 8K approved devices will bear a certification logo, which they will wear as a badge of honor.

Speaking of this newly minted 8K program, Hyogun Lee, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Our goal is to provide consumers with the ability to easily identify premium 8K displays from other devices.”

Televisions with 4K resolutions are becoming more commonplace, thanks in part to the gradual decrease in manufacturing costs and ever increasing consumer demand. The clarity that these TVs offer, provide a sense of realism that simply wasn’t attainable before. Now, 8K, takes this experience a few steps further.

It offers four times as many pixels as the standard 4K televisions for clarity, contrast and color and high dynamic range (HDR) performance. The 8KA Certification Program aims to distinguish true 8K TVs from lower resolution devices.

There are certain criteria that need to met here. This entails checking that the display resolutions reach 7680 x 4320, offer peak brightness greater than 600 nits, image transmission of HDMI2.1 and the availability of the high efficiency video codec (HVEC).

Samsung wants as many other manufacturers as possible to jump on the bandwagon soon. And is also embarking on an educational campaign to help promote the importance and benefits of the 8KA certification program to consumers everywhere.
