Wondering How the Z Fold 2’s Hinge Works?

Samsung is very proud of the latest Galaxy Z Fold 2. And rightly so, considering that it’s a marked improvement over its janky predecessor. The lessons learnt from the original Fold, allowed the company’s engineers to build a more robust folding hinge, which also made its way into the Galaxy Z Flip.

As such, the the Z Fold 2, opens and shuts with a more convincing ‘thud’, which is far more reassuring than the Fold’s. Will it do better in the long run? Well, that remains to be seen. But the entire point of this device is to showcase what Samsung and its engineers are capable of conjuring up, when given free reign to do as they please.

Take a look at this video for an in-depth look of how the folding hinge, which Samsung dubbed the ‘CAM mechanism’, looks and functions. It’s a pretty interesting to know the effort and know-how that went into building it. The hinge allows the two sides to stay open at multiple angles (from 70 -120 degrees), which allows for various use cases.

Even the software is clever enough to detect when this is taking place and adjust both sides of the screen to accommodate dual-screen functions. When in camera mode, the top section functions as the viewfinder while the bottom, houses the camera controls. The same is true of video playback and various other functions.

Let us know what you think of the new design and whether it’s enough to convince you that folding phones have matured enough to have a place in our world of over-sized smartphones.
