Xiaomi Launches New Foldable Smartphone
March 30, 2021Xiaomi has revealed its own version of a foldable smartphone. Called the Mi MIX FOLD, it measures 173.27mm x 133.38mm x 7.62mm. Similar to the Galaxy Fold 2, the Chinese phone features a single external screen in addition to the main foldable display. The company is touting many ‘firsts’ including a sophisticated camera lens setup.
The displays use Xiaomi’s own color calibration algorithm and are able to reach 900 nits peak brightness and 600 nits overall brightness. A shaped hinge allows the internal, flexible 8.01” WQHD+ resolution OLED display to fold into itself. It has a 4:3 aspect ratio and is able to display 1 billion colors, according to Xiaomi.
However, the external display’s 6.52” AMOLED only has a HD+ resolution but comes with a 90Hz refresh rate, 180Hz touch sampling rate. Sporting a 27:9 aspect ratio, Xiaomi claims it can reach 900 nits peak brightness, 700 nits overall brightness, and HDR10+ support.
Unsurprisingly, it’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 as well as 3,200MHz LPDDR5 storage, combined with UFS 3.1 high-speed flash memory. And to keep the device cool, Xiaomi has employed a number of cooling solutions, which include liquid cooling, thermal gel, multilayer graphite sheets and other heat dissipation methods.
The device is fitted with a quad speaker setup, which is made up of dual 1216 speakers positioned on either side of the screen. They are supposed to sound 40% louder than concessional speakers and inherits the same sound properties of the Mi 11 thanks to professional grade tuning through SOUND BY Harman Kardon.
It has a Surge C1 processor, a professional image processing chip. Developed in-house at a cost of RMB 140 million, the system features improved low-light focus capabilities for more accurate auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance, significantly improving image quality.
Xiaomi has fitted its new foldable phone with a 108MP pixel main camera and a 13MP ultra-wide angle camera with an impressive 123° field of view. They incorporate Liquid Lens technology, the first of it kind:
“It forms a lens-like structure with a transparent fluid wrapped in film, The radius of curvature of the spherical surface can be accurately changed thanks to a high-precision motor based on Xiaomi’s self-developed technology.”
As such it is capable of 3X optical zoom, up to 30X telephoto, and a minimum focus distance of 3cm. Xiaomi says that this tech allows one lens to cover the functions of two separate lenses. And in general, allow for more detailed photos and better exposure.
Similar to that of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold2, the Mi MIX FOLD features a dual battery design. They consist of two batteries with a capacity of 2,460mAh and 2,560mAh, which is a total of 5,020mAh. Capable of 67W fast charging, it can be charged to full in just 37 minutes. CNT technology allows the batteries to charge faster, safely.
The Mi MIX FOLD is offered in Standard and Ceramic Special Edition. The former comes with fifth-generation Corning® Gorilla® Glass back cover with ceramic texture. But the latter gets a gold middle frame and volume buttons, as well as a black ceramic back with special laser engraving.
Xiaomi is offering its new foldable phone at RMB 9,999 or 12GB+256GB, RMB 10,999 for 12GB+512GB and RMB 12,999 for the 16GB+512GB version. They will be available to pre-der in China from today, 30th March 2021 and officially open for purchase on April 16th.
