The wait is finally over, ZTE has revealed the world’s first smartphone with an under-display front camera. Let that sink in for a moment, because it’s a clear sheet of glass devoid of a notch or a hole punch. Aesthetically, the phone has the same sleekness of the rest of the ZTE Axon Series.

The non-obstructed display is layered over the ambient lighting, speaker and fingerprint sensors. It’s a remarkable effort that offers a clean look without disrupting any of the front facing sensors. This means that the phone is able to adjust its brightness and sense touches just like conventional devices.

It’s a 6.92 inch OLED display with support for 10-bit colour depth as well as 100% coverage of DCI-P3 colour gamut. It has a FHD+ resolution and a ratio of 20.5:9. This helps the display provide crisp colours and rich cinematic videos.

ZTE uses special under-display camera technology with dual-control chips and unique driver circuits. It also uses a special pixel matrix and in-house selfie algorithm. The display itself is made of high transparency material with organic and inorganic films that allow light to pass through and onto the front camera.

When taking a photo, the hardware allows the synchronization between the front camera and conventional display, which could mean that that the camera section of the screen goes blank while taking a shot. The unique driver circuit layout design and miniaturization of components allowed ZTE to build a system to avoid interference and reduce the impact on the camera.

The entire phone is just 7.98mm thick, which is remarkable considering what it offers. There’s a 3D curved glass on the back containing ten layers of structural stacks made with 36 different processes that create a unique texture. Housed in it is the 64MP main camera that supports 4K video at 60fps.

ZTE Axon 20 5G features upgraded antenna technology which helps to increase speeds. Twelve different antennas have been integrated into the outer surface of the middle frame. They also improve network connection stability and download speeds.

The phone also benefits from the latest MiFavor 10.5 UI that optimizes the display and supports movie-level screen optimization and with smart screen. There 9 temperature sensors within the Axon 20 5G, to precisely monitor its temperature. There is also a liquid cooling system to keep the phone cool when placed under load.

ZTE Axon 20 5G will be available to purchase in China for RMB2,198. Consumers can pre-order the phoe starting September 1, 2020 on the e-commerce channels including www.myzte.com, zte.jd.com and zte.tmall.com.
